Electric drives

An electric drive (often referred to as an electric controller) is a device used to control the output of a motor used, for example, to produce linear motion in an electric actuator. In our article on electric motors we referred to the feedback mechanism from a servo motor, shown schematically below.

What are types of electrical drives?

There are three general categories of electric drives: DC motor drives, eddy current drives and AC motor drives. Each of these general types can be further divided into numerous variations. Electric drives generally include both an electric motor and a speed control unit or system.

Where are electric drives used?

Electrical drive technology converts electrical energy from the power supply system or from a battery into mechanical energy and transmits the resulting force into motion. Many applications that make our daily lives easier – like lifts, escalators, gate drives, washing machines, mixers, electric razors, etc.

How do electrical drives work?

By positioning a drive between the electrical supply and the motor, power is fed into the drive, and the drive then controls and regulates the power that is fed into the motor. This allows control of speed, direction, acceleration, deceleration, torque and, in some applications, position of the motor shaft.

What is advantage of electric drive?

Available in wide range of torque, speed and power. Compact in size; electric drives occupy less space. Do not require warm-up time; they can be started immediately. Electric drives can be remote controlled.

What are the main components of electric drives?

Components are electric drive are :

  • Source.
  • Power modulator.
  • Motor.
  • Control unit.
  • Sensing unit.
  • Load.

What are AC and DC drives?

The “AC” stands for alternating current. AC-type drives are also known as adjustable speed drives, adjustable frequency drives, and variable speed drives. In contrast, DC drives are used to convert alternating current into direct current (The “DC” in DC drives is an acronym for direct current).

What is a DC drive?

A DC drive (direct current drive) is a DC motor speed control system which convert the input AC supply to the DC using converter circuit based on rectifier (diodes and thyristors) to control the speed of DC motors. Earlier, the variable DC voltage was generated by DC generators to control the speed of a DC motor.

Why drives are used in motor?

A drive is the electronic device that harnesses and controls the electrical energy sent to the motor. The drive feeds electricity into the motor in varying amounts and at varying frequencies, thereby indirectly controlling the motor's speed and torque.

Which of the following are the applications of electric drives?

Electrical drives are extensively used in the huge number of domestic as well as industrial applications which includes motors, transportation systems, factories, textile mills, pumps, fans, robots, etc.

What is the function of drives?

A drive is a location (medium) that is capable of storing and reading information that is not easily removed, like a disk or disc. All drives store files and programs used by your computer. For example, when you write a letter in a word processor, the program is loaded from the hard drive.

What are the requirements of an electric drive?

A modern electric drive system has five main functional blocks as shown above a mechanical load, a motor, a power modulator, a power source and a controller.

What is the disadvantage of DC drive?

High initial cost. Its operation cost and maintenance cost is very high due to the presence of commutator and brush gear. Risk in commutation failure because due to the sparking occurs at brush it cannot operate in explosive and hazard conditions.

What is electric drive explain with block diagram?

The aggregate of the electric motor, the energy transmitting shaft and the control equipment by which the motor characteristics are adjusted and their operating conditions with respect to mechanical load varied to suit practical requirements is called as electric drive.

What is braking in electrical drives?

Electrical Braking is usually employed in applications to stop a unit driven by motors in an exact position or to have the speed of the driven unit suitably controlled during its deceleration. Electrical braking is used in applications where frequent, quick, accurate or emergency stops are required.

What is eddy current drive?

Eddy current drives, also known generically as magnetic drives, eddy current clutches or magnetic clutches are driven at constant speed by an AC motor and utilize a simple electro-magnetic device to control torque and speed to the driven load.

What is dynamic of electrical drives?

When an electric motor rotates, it is usually connected to a load which has a rotational or translational motion. The speed of the motor may be different from that of the load. To analyze the relation among the drives and loads, the concept of dynamics of electrical drives is introduced.

Which drive is better AC or DC?

If your application involves a large amount of power and complex changes in speed and direction, the AC drive might be right for you. However, if your application operates in a low-speed, high torque environment, the DC drive might be the best option.

Where is AC drive used for?

An AC drive is a device used to control the speed of an electrical motor in order to: enhance process control. reduce energy usage and generate energy efficiently. decrease mechanical stress on motor control applications.

What are the advantages of DC drives?

Advantages of DC drives include: High starting torque, easy installation, speed control over a wide range (both above and below the rated speed), quick starting, stopping, reversing, and acceleration, linear speed-torque curve and accurate step-less speed with constant torque.
